Western theatre as an art form was introduced to China less than one hundred years ago. This imported art form is referred to as huaju (spoken drama) so as to be differentiated from traditional Chinese theatre, in which singing is a major feature. In order to have Chinese audiences accept and appreciate the new art form, Jiao Juyin, a scholar and practitioner of both huaju and traditional Chinese theatre, devoted his entire life to integrating the Stanislavsky system for training actors and building a character's psychology with the artistic presentational methods of traditional Chinese theatre. The result of his endeavor was a new directing style with a Chinese national identity, which was regarded as the Jiao Juyin directorial system. Jiao summarized his new huaju style as solid life, honest experience, spiking image. His production of Tea House (1957) was perhaps the most representative of his artistic principles, and the new system in practice.Subjects--Topical Terms:
