This study investigated the characteristics and reactivity of the acid-treated wood and the residual pulp lignin from Norway spruce and sugar maple wood. A major emphasis is on the aryl-ether cleavage reactions and the phenolic hydroxyl group (PhOH) generated is determined in situ by the periodate oxidation method.

Under a relatively mild acid (hot-water extraction) condition near 160 °C, a significant cleavage of the aryl-ether unit is observed. The results imply that some of the beta-aryl ether units are hydrolyzed, especially for the sugar maple lignin. In case of the residual lignin in kraft pulps, they still contained some relatively acid-labile aryl ether units. The nature of these reactive structures needs to be examined further.

The formation of the so-called Klason lignin derived from a strong sulfuric acid treatment (72 %) of wood involved both the hydrolysis of aryl ether units and the lignin condensation reactions. The latter condensation is dominated for the spruce wood lignin. For the sugar maple wood lignin, the initial aryl -- ether cleavage is more pronounced and then followed by the condensation reaction.

Although the Klason lignin is known to be very condensed, it is still reactive in alkalis at temperatures around 180 °C. These include the cleavages of aryl ether structures and the formation of alkali -- soluble materials. Also, the Klason lignin is shown to be reactive under typical carboxymethylation conditions. They yielded a significant amount of soluble materials around 20 % for the Spruce and 50 % for the sugar maple Klason lignin, respectively. These soluble products have a high content of PhOH units. Thus, the CM reaction may provide a means to utilize the Klason lignin.
