Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2015.
This dissertation explores the intersection of economic history, development economics, and land use. In the first chapter, I examine whether imperial legacy causally determines contemporaneous savings behaviors, with considerable attention dedicated to identifying the channels through which such patterns persist. investigate these questions through a spatial regression discontinuity design (RDD) using experimental and survey data collected in present-day Romania across the Habsburg-Ottoman imperial border. In the second chapter, I examine whether the development of transportation infrastructure promotes economic integration and the resulting effects on regional economic welfare. To address these questions, I exploit a natural historical experiment in Central Europe: Austro-Hungarian railroad construction from 1830-1907. In the last chapter I evaluate the effects of cash transfers on farm investment and land use decisions. Specifically, I explore whether Romanian farmers receiving payments from the European Union Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Measure 141 (M141) have increased investment in productive activities and/or expanded agricultural land, and if there are historical interactions with the program effects, given Romania's unique political and economic history.
