Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
This paper examines why the high-end, collectible car and fine art auction worlds seem to be unable to coexist. Along with an in-depth look into the culture of car collecting (including collectors' motives and the various genres and methods of collecting), it will examine why top auction houses like Christie's and Sotheby's are unable to successfully have internal car departments and auctions. This paper will take a look at the history of this duopoly, with the goal of exploring the factors that have contributed to both houses' failure to enter this $1.3 billion market, while smaller, more specialized auction houses have succeeded. The Pebble Beach Conours d'Elegance - the premiere week-long collectible car and auction showcase - will serve as a case study throughout to illustrate the complexities of having to plan and execute a traveling auction. The two collectible categories have not been able to merge in the two largest auction houses in the world, however, the similarities between the two markets can no longer be ignored and deserve a detailed analysis to better understand the relationship between them.
