Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2016.
Artworks have been present in the hospital setting since ancient Greece and Rome, and the conception of medicine. It was not until recently, however, that the way in which artwork can be displayed, and it's relevance in the health care environment, is being realized. There is a movement toward aesthetics in our contemporary society, and healthcare is in the midst of it. With this have come changes in hospital planning, design and mission. Health care institutions are beginning to focus on developing spaces in tandem with artworks, creating environments closer in relation to gallery spaces, and utilizing the transformative powers of art to enhance the hospital experience. Art collections have become a means of transforming the hospital space into a healing environment for patients, and staff, while presenting new opportunities for artists and communities to be involved. This thesis will focus on the emerging concept of hospital art collections---why they exist, how they function and how they can benefit the health care environment.
