The Americans with Disabilities Act was constituted July 26, 1990 and was enacted so that there could be an equal opportunity law for people with disabilities. The Whitney Museum of American Art, built in 1930, some 50 years before the constitution of the Act, is one of several institutions that accommodates visitors who have physical and mental disabilities at and progressive and innovative level. The objective of this case study on the Whitney Museum's access programs is to help educate others on this topic, and to contribute in helping reform and enhance visitor experiences in art museums for those with mental or physical disabilities and their families.

This study highlights the importance of access programs in museums, and providing more information on how museum access programs function from both an educational and logistical standpoint. It provides an inside glance of an institution that took the mandate, and tailored a program with the highest creative and executional standards. Research of scholarly journals and periodicals, observations of the Whitney Museum's available access programs and interviews with the Whitney Museum's Director of Access Programs, as well as other high-profile art museums within New York City, were conducted.

Through this case study, facts suggest the idea that the Museum of Modern Art is considered the leading art museum when it comes to innovative and plentiful programming for visitors with disabilities, but there is something to be said about the Whitney Museum being a role model for accessibility programming. For institutions that are smaller or may have less developed programming, the Whitney can provide a clear standard or blueprint for those institutions to build off of. By incorporating the four sub-categories of accessibility programming into a strategy plan, museums are able to reach out to a large community that is already prominent in society.
