Reliability growth is related to product lifecycle cost (PLCC). This study involved an examination of reliability growth as a predictor of PLCC for heating and air conditioning systems. Product unreliability contributes to a high PLCC. PLCC reduction during the warranty period has become an issue of great importance to manufacturers. Industry competitiveness, such as in the heating and air conditioning industry, depends on warranty costs, reliability, and robust product cost estimates for the entire product life cycle. Product manufacturers need to research and examine the possible ways of reducing PLCC to improve profitability over the lifecycle of the product. The problem is that an accurate technique of estimating product unreliability is lacking, thereby limiting the ability to decrease high PLCC during the warranty period. The purpose of this quantitative regression study was to investigate the degree to which reliability growth, including mean time between failure (MTBF), system availability (AV), and failure rate (FR), predicted PLCC during the warranty period for heating and air conditioning units. Lennox International air conditioning and heating units, both residential and commercial, in the Southeast, Northeast, and Western regions of the United States constituted the population of the study. Stratified sampling was used to randomly select 133 Lennox warranty units. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the reliability growth comprised of the predictor variables of MTBF, AV, and FR with PLCC serving as the criterion variable. Reliability growth in terms of MTBF significantly correlated with PLCC (p < .001, r = -.88). Reliability growth in terms of AV and FR significantly negatively correlated with PLCC with both indicating p < .05. Recommendations include conducting reliability growth beyond warranty to predict PLCC.
