Thesis (M.S.)--Utica College, 2016.
This project studied different methods that can be used by online retailers to reduce e-commerce fraud. Due the rise of e-commerce fraud, most e-businesses must develop strategies and procedures to prevent or mitigate this growing epidemic. This project attempted to answer four questions that may assist organizations in the prevention and mitigation of e-commerce fraud. The research questions asked includes how data analytic tools and customer profiling can help reduce fraud. Also, the research presented explains how employee negligence could adversely affect many organizations who are finding it difficult to reduce e-commerce fraud. Findings suggests numerous methods and tools that can be used to help prevent e-commerce fraud, such as the implementation of data analytic software, namely Sift Science. Moreover, investigators in the industry divulge how customer profiling can or cannot be beneficial in mitigating e-commerce fraud. Lastly, the research findings present other various methods, such as contacting customer's by phone or email, or requiring stronger authentication before website access that will assist in preventing online fraud. The importance of this research is substantial due to the lack of academic research focused on the reduction of fraud in e-commerce. E-commerce is the way of the future, and increasing the body of knowledge that informs online retailers must continue to be a high research priority at the academic as well as at the industrial level.
