Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Florida, 2016.
The purpose of this study was to describe characteristics of and best practices in exemplary rural secondary-education agriculture youth entrepreneurship programs in the United States. Three exemplar programs were selected from three different states where qualitative and quantitative data were gathered from teachers and students and mixed in order to write three case studies. These cases were analyzed separately and then across cases in order to extract commonalities. Overarching findings were that entrepreneurship was most often taught through a students' supervised agricultural experience program. Students shared five characteristics: they had a mixed affinity for entrepreneurship, they had a few common barriers to agriculture enterprise formation, they had similar items that did and did not influence their career choices, and their families tended to influence their SAE type. Teachers shared five characteristics: they were experienced, held advanced degrees, had high scores on the entrepreneurial scales, had prior experience with entrepreneurship, and were described as being open minded and enthusiastic. Winning competitions was a common goal of the programs. The local context varied for each program, but, generally, the more the community focused on providing inroads for students to return, the more students felt positively toward returning. Recommendations for practice include providing pre-service teachers opportunities to learn entrepreneurship and developing a national curriculum that imbeds entrepreneurial concepts into existing curricula and SAE.
