The purpose of this research was to study successful female entrepreneurs in the technology industry. Expanding on personality psychology research, I focused on the identity construction of participants using McAdams (2001) Life Story Interview. I sought to gain not only a greater understanding of the behaviors and motivations of my participants, but of the drivers behind their behaviors and motivations. This study addressed the following research questions: What do the life stories told by successful female entrepreneurs in the technology industry reveal about their current personal identities and their driving motivations? In addition, what do these stories and identities reveal about the cultures and societies within which these stories have been shaped? And finally, what do they suggest about what interventions may support an increase in the number of successful female entrepreneurs in the technology industry?

During analysis, I looked for patterns across stories that included critical experiences, moments, events, and people acknowledged by participants as having a significant impact on their lives. I found ten major themes across the ten life stories, which I grouped into McAdams (1993) thematic categories of imagery, tone, and the motivational themes of agency and communion. The themes within imagery included academic and career achievement, nontraditional female role, and idealized father figure. The themes within tone were impermanence, and forgiveness. The themes that demonstrated participants' motivational drivers were agency: self-mastery, achievement/responsibility, empowerment and communion: care/help. Finally, the intersection of agency and communion was demonstrated through the motivational theme of generativity, referring to one's desire to establish a positive legacy of the self for future generations.

In conclusion, I found that the ten entrepreneurs shared a particular type of narrative identity that was conducive to the pursuit of entrepreneurship in technology; a terrain they described as volatile, ambiguous, isolating, sexist, and often heart-breaking, where caring for and leading people mattered. I found that the family unit (participants' parents) was the major vehicle for shaping identities and that the realization of impermanence (often loss) during the pivotal years of childhood and adolescence were fundamental to shaping participant's identities and driving motivations towards female entrepreneurship in technology.
