Helping mothers-to-be develop sensitive, attuned caregiving skills may be one of the most important parenting preparations to attend to before the birth of a first child. These skills create a critical foundation, which allow a developing child to build a secure attachment to a primary caregiver. This qualitative dissertation study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to examine the first-hand experiences of a small group of 7, lower-risk primiparas, from the Boulder, CO area, voluntarily enrolled in a prenatal attachment- and mentalization-based program called The Reflective Parenting Program Prenatal Workshop Series. The researcher examined the following: (a) the lived experience of pregnant primiparas involved in a 10-week, prenatal, psycho-educational group, in relationship to themselves, their babies, the group, and their support network; (b) their experience in relation to developing their own abilities to mentalize, practice mindfulness, regulate their emotions, and experience maternal-fetal attachment during this 10-week period; and (c) the feedback from these participants, and their various adult attachment styles, to determine in what ways this program might be improved to better meet the needs of other, similar new mothers. The researcher employed 2, in-depth, semistructured, clinical interviews, multiple self-report measurements, observations from 3 facilitators, and participant feedback. The group was received enthusiastically by participants, and was found to provide a forum for building skills. Due to the preventative nature of the program, and the critical nature of secure attachment across the lifespan, more emphasis should be placed on incorporating and examining the implementation of such programs during the prenatal period.
