Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2015.
There are 5.5 million children in the United States with at least one undocumented immigrant parent (Passel & Cohn, 2011). As the number of undocumented immigrants has grown, there has also been a substantial rise in the law enforcement around unauthorized immigration, specifically the number of deportations (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2009). Despite this, there have been few studies to examine the costs of these enforcement activities on Latino immigrant families and their children. One of the major aims of this dissertation study was to identify the relevant elements of this deportation separation experience from the perspective of the children. Detention and deportation separations are also special cases of disruptions in attachment bonds. Thus, the second aim was to understand how these forced separations impact Latino children's perceptions of their relationships with the detained/deported attachment figure.

A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to capture the voices of three school-age Latino children in California. Analyses of the semi-structured interviews yielded insights into how they perceived what happened before, during and after this separation experience, as well as their feelings thoughts, behaviors and reactions in response this event. According to these children's stories, these sudden, abrupt separations engender a range of emotional and behavioral responses, including shock, confusion, fear, sadness, withdrawal, anger, and reactions akin to those of post-traumatic stress. The children shared how they made meaning of the event, with information management within the family emerging as a key influential factor. The interview captured how the children came to view the availability of their attachment figure following this deportation separation. The deportation separation has the capacity to threaten and disrupt the psychological availability of the caregiver, as well as impose shifts in the family system. Salient cultural characteristics emerged in relation to this parental deportation event. It was found that the child's a) prior attachment history, b) cultural norms of their ethnic subgroup (e.g. familismo), c) expectations of their specific family, and d) the larger oppressive socio-political climate all impact how they understand and respond to this event. Clinical implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.
