Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Arizona University, 2015.
Objective: The majority of health studies support a positive relationship between racial discrimination and a variety of health outcomes and health behaviors. Despite the growth of Native Americans (NA) populations living within urban areas a minimal amount of research has been conducted on NA experiences with racial discrimination. The current exploratory study examined the extent to which NA and multi-racial groups experience racial discrimination within Indian reservation border towns.

Methods: Data for this exploratory study was collected by survey from (N = 671) participants which included 294 Native Americans, 76 African Americans, 186 Hispanics, 65 Caucasians, and 48 Asians. Qualitative data was collected via semi-structured interview from (N = 25) participants who were primarily Native American. Experiences of racial discrimination were measured by using micro-level (Everyday Discrimination and Lifetime Discrimination Scales) and meso-level (Major Experiences of Discrimination, Community Places and Settings, and Discrimination in the Media Scales) measures and an Internalization and Systematic racism scale.

Results: Results indicate that Native Americans and African Americans experienced significantly higher levels of racial discrimination on both micro and macro-level measures than other racial groups measured. Results place Native Americans at high levels within known-group intensity patterns of exposure to racial discrimination (Brondolo et al., 2005). Non-White Multi-ethnic participants reported higher levels of racial discrimination than White multi-ethnics but this was not significant. White Multi-ethnic groups reported significantly higher levels of internalized racism. The Native American Only group reported significantly higher levels of internalized racism than the White Native American group. Native Americans who resided in Flagstaff (5 years or more) reported higher levels of racial discrimination than residents from larger metropolitan areas but this was not significant. Native American residents from Flagstaff, Arizona combined with residents from other Indian reservation border towns reported significantly higher levels of racial discrimination than larger metropolitan areas on several measures (EDS, CPS, and MED). Native American residents of Flagstaff (1 year or less) reported marginally significant higher levels of Internalized racism than 5 year residents. Qualitative findings indicate that Native American participants experience higher levels of racial discrimination within Indian reservation border towns that were directed specifically at Native Americans as a racial group as compared to more general experiences in other urban areas. Qualitative themes that emerged included processes of Everyday Racism, such as: social exclusion and marginalization, problematization, containment, and dominant group members as perpetrators.

Conclusions: Overall, results from this exploratory study are promising. Results suggests that there is a need to develop ways for NAs and multi-racial groups to cope, address, and reduce barriers arising from racial discrimination which studies indicate can impact health, wellbeing, life chances, and socio-economic position. Additional research is needed to better conceptualize the dynamics of racial discrimination within Indian reservation border towns and among NA populations in order to validate current results.
