Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2015.
This thesis will focus on two works by two female authors, specifically viewing them as autofictional---rather than autobiographical---texts in the framework of Serge Doubrovsky, seeking to illuminate the manner in which they understood and narrativized the multifaceted, fragmented subject and self. In reading Nella Larsen and Virginia Woolf as a unit of study, I attempt to tease out the similarities and even connections of these women, living and writing during the same era, across oceans and cultures, with the hope of identifying the art, as it were, of losing the self for the sake of expanding it. This double disavowal of the comprehensive self facilitates the mobility of these women across spaces of limited and static identity; as the tenuous self moves fluidly between walled spaces of both fiction and non-fiction, it similarly moves through and over the borders of nation, continent, racial and gender norms, outside of the spectral remnants of histories and cultural assumptions.
