Kent Monkman is a Canadian artist that challenges history, artists of the 19th century, the role of art in determining power, and accordingly, Canadian viewers. This thesis will analyze Monkman's work from a perspective critical of the 19th century art historical documents of America.The gendering of these landscapes, evident by The Hudson River School, is one of the most powerful tools used both to entice viewers and create a relationship of dominance and submissiveness between the sexes.

Together, Monkman presents a different version of history to be marveled at and questioned.
