Though there are countless critical examinations of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series that are grounded in feminist theory, every discussion seems to be centered around one central question: Is Harry Potter a feminist Children's series? By focusing on the series' central female character, Hermione Granger, and the various roles she inhabits throughout the books, from love interest to political activist to girl warrior, I argue that the series remains locked in traditional gender roles and is not truly a piece of feminist Children's literature. While Hermione may occasionally break out of traditional gender roles, she is more often stereotyped and held back by the patriarchal society of Rowling's Wizarding world. Her interactions with her female classmates, which often acts to assure readers that Hermione is 'not like the other girls', actually encourages ideas such as girl hate and demonstrates a lack of sisterhood throughout the series. By using the work of critics such as Elizabeth Heilman and Trevor Donaldson, Eliza Dresang, and Glenna Andrade, I critically examine the roles Hermione inhabits, particularly the roles of political activist and girl warrior, and argue that Hermione remains locked in a patriarchal world, meaning that Harry Potter cannot be labeled as feminist Children's literature.
