Thesis (M.A.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2015.
Dystopian fiction features imaginary future societies in which the stated goal is to secure the physical and emotional well-being of the populace and promote equality, but when those societies' methods are put into practice, many of their members are oppressed and abused for the sake of a favored group. Scholars frequently identify language restriction as a unifying theme within the dystopian genre but do not recognize it as a definitive generic element. Study of the genre, both in general and in Young Adult (YA) fiction, reveals language is a consistent generic device across dystopian texts. Specifically, and most importantly, dystopian fiction utilizes language as means for both social control and defiance; the reappropriation of language as a means of liberation is especially important in YA dystopias. Analysis of recent YA dystopias demonstrates the essential relationship between the genre and its manipulation of language.
