The current study assessed the feasibility and plausibility of a Spanish version of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Relajacion de Estres Basada en la Atencion Plena (REBAP) among adult, moderately distressed, Puerto Rican participants living on the Island of Puerto Rico. Participants (n = 42) received eight weeks of REBAP offered in a small group setting. A baseline assessment period preceded treatment thus; assessments were repeated just prior to therapy onset, just after therapy ended, and nine weeks following treatment completion. Outcome measures included emotional distress, cognitive content (rumination, positive states of mind) and personality indices.

After eight weeks of MBSR training and a four hour mindfulness retreat, the majority of participants in the current study reported statistically and clinically significant decreases in depression, anxiety, and ruminative thinking, and increased positive states of mind compared to pre-treatment scores. All Cohen's effect size values suggested moderate to large effect sizes. Most participants (97%) met the BSI criteria for clinically significant distress before treatment whereas only 29% met clinical case criteria following treatment. Participants retained these benefits when re-examined nine weeks after the treatment ended. Thus, the Spanish version of the MBSR program appears to produce outcomes that are highly similar to the original English language version of the program.

Findings from the current study failed to replicate previous research regarding the NEO-Five Factors of Personality, treatment adherence, and amount of home practice. Results from the current study found no significant relationships between the three personality factors examined: Agreeableness, Openness to Experience, and Neuroticism; and the number of absences or the amount of time participants practiced the skills taught to them during the program.

The Spanish version of MBSR was well accepted by the Puerto Rican participants. Ninety-eight percent of those who started the program completed it. Compliance with homework assignments was excellent and participants provided highly favorable ratings of the program elements. The generalizability of the aforementioned findings, recruitment, and cultural considerations are discussed within the context of future research efforts.
