Thesis (Ed.D.)--Hofstra University, 2015.
This dissertation research is a longitudinal (5 year) comparative analysis that juxtaposes the original research data from Denny Taylor's 1977--1981 Family Literacy study with data gathered from six contemporary middle class families to explore the changes in family literacy over time. This study provides insight into the increasing complexity of the early literacy experiences of children in contemporary families.

Societal shifts in the past few decades have resulted in radical changes in childhood and have generated new patterns of work, play and literacy in families. Underlying the theoretical foundation of this study is the view of literacy as social practice, not merely as a set of decontextualized skills divorced from meaning. Literacy practices are culturally embedded and reflect the social, political, cultural, and technological contexts. The area of New Literacies is also central to the theoretical framework of the study. New Literacies explores the incorporation of digital technologies within literacy practices resulting in the evocation of values, sensibilities and procedures that differ from "conventional" literacies (Knobel and Lankshear, 2007).

A detailed overview of the families is presented and is a basis for a comparative analysis which relies upon ethnographic observations, focused conversations, artifact collection and analysis to gain an increased understanding of the evolving nature of literacy interactions within families as well as the ways in which technology frames semiotic events in the home.

Family literacy events and practices are often complex and dialogic. The findings of this study illustrate the shifts in, and expansions of, family literacy practices. Digitality has transformed reading and writing into near synchronous events through multimedia literacy exchanges including texting, tweeting, online postings, and participatory video games. Families demonstrate that online blogging, group emailing, texting, and instant messaging are fast and convenient ways to connect with one another and gain social support from extended family members and friends when needed. Virtual exposure to global languages and cultures is found to be prevalent in many everyday digital literacy events even for the youngest family members when sites like YouTube or search engines like Google are utilized.
