Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Utah, 2016.
This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between ESL (English as a Second Language) instructors' accentedness rating, ethnicity, and expectations of teaching competence at a university in the U.S. Previous research found that East-Asian-looking instructors may receive significantly higher accentedness ratings and significantly lower teaching competence ratings than their Caucasian-looking counterparts from native-speaking U.S. undergraduates, and an inverse correlation may exist between accentedness ratings and expected teaching competence ratings.

This study aims to examine whether the same relations hold in a different context by replicating the research methodology (i.e. matched-guise technique, ANOVA test, and correlation test) in Rubin's 1992 study. A group of university ESL students at an American university were randomly selected and asked to rate the degree of accent and expected teaching competence of either a Caucasian- or an East-Asian-looking ESL instructor based on the same speech sample by a native speaker of American English. The results indicate that the subjects did not rate the degree of accent of the Caucasian and East Asian guises of ESL instructors differently. They also expected both guises to be competent ESL teachers, and the ratings of expected teaching competence were found unrelated to the ethnicity or accentedness ratings of the guises.
