Despite considerable progress in women's professional advancement in the United States there remains an underrepresentation of women in leadership positions (Azmi, Ismail, & Basir, 2012; Brinia, 2012). The specific problem is that it is not known how motherhood and career breaks related to motherhood are perceived by women in terms of their own career progression or regression. The purpose of the qualitative single case study was to explore the perceived impact of motherhood and motherhood career breaks of 6- months or greater on female leadership career progression in the United States. To address the purpose of the study, a qualitative research approach was used. A single case study was used because there was a single context, based on the unit of analysis of the individual experiences. For this target population, the sample for this study included five working mothers who are in the middle to top management positions. This qualitative research study posed the following two research questions: How do mothers working in middle to top management leadership positions perceive their motherhood as a factor that affects their career progression? How has motherhood career breaks influenced women leaders' career progression? The thematic analysis of data in support of research question one led to the conclusion that motherhood has a complex yet direct impact on career progression. The thematic analysis of data in support of research question two led to the conclusion that utilization of maternity leave to take a career break doesn't directly impact career progression. Future research should be conducted to discover additional strategies to support retaining and developing mothers in executive and leadership roles throughout a career lifecycle. The first recommendation is for researchers to conduct a longitudinal study to gather more powerful insight into the impact of motherhood on career patterns over time. Second recommendation is to conduct a quantitative method study to examine pay records of executive women in leadership roles before motherhood, during motherhood, and after the children are age of majority. Study findings were utilized to create a set of recommendations framed within the five defined themes that emerged during data analysis.
