There is a problem in large, suburban high schools that relates to poor academic achievement, low attendance rates, and a high number of discipline referrals. This problem leads to low benchmark scores that affect accreditation, leading to a decrease or loss of government funding. This study addresses the correlation between participation in one or more sports to three specific indicators of student success. A quantitative correlational study was used to explain the degree of association between the number of sports seasons for each student and the three outcome variables of grade point average, attendance, and discipline referrals. Archived data from a single school year, and a specific large, suburban high school was used in the research. The results of the research showed a significant relationship exists between participation rates and each of the three outcome variables associated with student success. As participation rates increased from 0 to 3, the mean grade point average and mean attendance rates for students increased, while the average number of discipline referrals decreased. The results of this study have corroborated the previous research and literature on the topic. The results are important because they show a significant correlation between participation and student success. The results and conclusions can be used to advocate for athletic programming and funding.
