The purpose of this study is to identify perceived barriers that women face in accessing the position of superintendent in New Jersey. It has been reported through data that the majority of school district superintendents in New Jersey are men. This dissertation is to study current female superintendents and disclose any perceived barriers and how they successfully overcame those barriers to successfully fulfill the position of superintendent. A thorough literature review indicated that there are a disproportionate number of female school superintendents in comparison to the number of women in the field of education. Recent data for the State of New Jersey indicated a slight decrease in the percentage of women who hold the position of superintendent, from previous reports, and reported a disparate number of female superintendents. Review of studies on this topic conducted in other states disclosed common barriers that exist for women obtaining this leadership position. A study in New Jersey on this topic could not be located through my research. This qualitative study will use face-to-face interviews to identify barriers that are encountered and may affect the number of women who reach the level of superintendent, specifically in New Jersey. The study will also seek to understand, through the interviews, how women overcame those barriers to serve as a superintendent.
