A large body of research demonstrates a positive correlation between parental academic engagement and child outcomes. Despite the growing evidence supporting the importance of parental academic engagement as a fundamental method for enhancing student achievement, teachers continue to struggle to engage parents (Theodorou, 2007). However, views regarding parental academic engagement vary among individuals, groups, and cultures (Barbarin, McCandies, Coleman, & Hill, 2005; De Gaetano, 2007). Therefore, it is crucial to understand barriers to parental academic engagement in these instances. Parental self-efficacy has been identified as a barrier to parental academic engagement among the Latino population (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1995). Therefore, it is fundamental that professionals working with this population have knowledge and understanding of parental self-efficacy, as it is vital that the educational system recognize cultural variations of families from nondominant groups, as well as the reasons for when, how, and why parents become involved in their children's education (Hoover-Dempsey, Bassler, & Brissie, 1992; Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1995; Jones & Prinz, 2005). This clinical dissertation was developed to assist professionals working with Latino parents and their preschool-aged children. It aims to provide awareness of the role parental self-efficacy may play on parental academic engagement in their children's education and to determine culturally sensitive approaches to creating partnerships between teachers, parents, and other professionals working with the Latino population.
