In the United States children from diverse language backgrounds constitute a growing proportion of the school-aged population. The present study examined the relationship between home language background and performance on standardized and experimental measures of cognitive and linguistic abilities in young children. Ninety-five children ages five to eight from diverse language backgrounds were assessed using a standardized verbal and nonverbal intelligence measure, and an experimental tablet-based Executive Functioning task. Relationships between parental responses on a home language questionnaire and performance on standardized and experimental measures varied. Analyses of participant language profiles suggest that home language exposure mediates performance on a standardized assessment of English verbal intelligence. More specifically, a positive relationship was observed between reported daily English usage and performance on the measure. A significant relationship was not found between daily home language environment and performance on the standardized nonverbal intelligence measure and the experimental Executive Functioning task. The effectiveness of home language questionnaires is discussed with regard to gathering useful language information and predicting performance in elementary-aged children.
