Historically, the Puerto Rico Department of Education has faced difficulty in creating bilingual citizens. The lack of persistent environments in which Puerto Rican learners of English as a Second Language (ESLs) can regularly practice their English is a major obstacle towards their goal of achieving proficiency. The lack of practice may increase their fear or apprehension towards using the language and decrease their overall willingness to use it. Educators strive to provide as close to an all-English environment as possible during formal instruction, but the fundamental nature of this classroom setting may actually perpetuate the problem. Informal settings may provide a persistent environment in which ESL learners can practice their English without fear of negative evaluation. One type of informal setting that is readily available to many learners is online multiplayer video games. These games allow ESL learners to practice English speaking in a setting which increases their willingness to communicate (WTC) and reduces anxiety in the second language. The primary purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between cumulative time spent playing online multiplayer video games and two criterion variables, willingness to communicate in English and communicative anxiety, for Puerto Rican ESL learners. The participants were 76 ESL students from a private university in Puerto Rico. The results of a Spearman rho analysis indicated a statistically significant relationship between cumulative time spent playing online multiplayer video games and increased WTC and lowered communicative anxiety among the participants. The findings support previous studies that found a relationship between online multiplayer video gameplay and increased WTC and lowered communicative anxiety among second language learners. Recommendations include using online multiplayer video games as instructional tools and the assessment of informal settings as environments for second language learning.
