Thesis (Ph.D.)--St. John's University (New York), 2017.
This dissertation explores improvisation in art-based disciplines such as music, dance, and theater to understand the major ideas and workings behind improvisation and its process. The project defines an improvisatory pedagogy and proposes a studio-based classroom for the teaching of writing as a response to 21st century multiliteracies including the use of emerging media in the writing classroom. The teaching of writing today no longer focuses solely on alphabetic text, but also on the multimodal, multimedia, and multigenre work including digital, handmade, written, and more. Writing Studies can fully embrace this notion of the teaching of writing that encompasses recent discussions of design's place in writing by using improvisation more consciously during teaching and by using a studio model as the space for the teaching of writing.
