Violence against women in intimate relationships is a wide-spread, persistent social problem. For decades feminist scholars, advocates and service providers have been researching and treating these issues. Over time, our labels have changed from "wife assault" to domestic violence to what we now term intimate partner violence (IPV). So too have our definitions. What was once thought of as consisting primarily of physical abuse, single incidents that cause obvious signs like bruises and cuts, has grown to include a wide range of violent behaviors. Unfortunately, measurement of IPV continues to focus on physical violence. In the Duluth Model of batterer intervention, the "Power and Control Wheel" (Pence & Paymar, 1985) is a tool used to identify 10 categories of abuse, but instruments used to measure IPV typically capture no more than four different forms of violence. Using the Duluth Model, a 110-item instrument, Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse, and Control Scale (IP-VACS) was developed and preliminary tests were run on its psychometric properties. A total of 11 subscales were created. The instrument was administered to women in the United States and Canada (N = 76). Cronbach's Alpha for the instrument was .98 with subscale scores ranging from .77 to .97. Correlations among subscales were explored to aid interpretation of meaning and value of the scale scores given the very high alpha for the scale as a whole. Item frequencies suggest the IP-VACS response options, on a 5-point Likert-type scale, are appropriate to capture the occurrence of abuse women encountered. Through two-tailed paired samples t-tests, the IP-VACS appears to be sensitive to changes in abuse over time based on scores relating to the intimate relationship before and after separating from the abuser. The instrument incorporated open-ended questions to survey women about experiences of violence not already included on the IP-VACS giving women the opportunity to share more of their story and assist with content-related issues. Preliminary testing resulted in strong psychometric analyses. Further testing is recommended to examine validity of test scores. Based on preliminary results, the IP-VACS has potential research, legal, and clinical implications.
