Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2017.
This dissertation sought to investigate what lessons could be learned from examining how African American males experienced developing a sense of masculinity. This study was qualitative in nature, case study in methodology, and constructivist in theoretical paradigm. The population of investigation was the African American male. The sample of this paper was nine African American males who all varied in age, education, and socioeconomic status. Thematic analysis was conducted on the data gathered from the interviews. This meant that codes were established, and then grouped into patterns, which were then grouped into themes. The results found ten emergent themes concerning the development of African American masculinity. They were: masculinity is developed in terms of how one looks to others, masculinity is filtered through a familial lens, developing masculinity meant developing self-sufficiency, developing masculinity meant building character, developing masculinity meant developing mentally, masculinity is a journey, not a destination, developing masculinity meant developing a physical presence, the influence of the stereotypical "street" template, navigating any race-related issues while developing masculinity, and developing masculinity meant developing spiritually. Lastly, suggestions for future research based upon these findings were given.
