Research suggests that intimate partner violence occurs at similar rates in same-sex and heterosexual couples, however stereotypes may minimize the seriousness of same sex intimate partner violence. This minimization negatively impacts the victim's willingness to seek out legal resources and may put the victim at greater risk. These types of biases that occur in IPV may extend to perceptions of stalking and the process of intervention. Currently, there is little to no research comparing same-sex and heterosexual former intimate stalking. This study serves as a preliminary evaluation of whether or not the public perceives former same sex and heterosexual couple experiencing stalking differently. Results of this study demonstrated there was not a statistically significant difference in participant responses between the heterosexual vignettes and the same sex vignettes, x2 (3, n=152) =6.08, p>.05). Additional research is needed to further compare these groups and further identify different dynamics impacting victim experience.
