This dissertation studies the radicalization of the traditionalist Islamic milieu in Iran since the middle of the twentieth-century. The historical period is divided into two distinct segments separated by the 1979 Islamic Revolution: the first when the radicalization emerged in reaction to the secularizing efforts of the rising nation-state under monarchy, while in the second segment, it took place in the postrevolutionary Iran under the Islamists. I argue that in both cases, secularizing and/or liberalizing policies of the state led to the radicalization of a segment within the Islamist milieu in reaction to these policies in defense of their version of an Islamic society.

During the first period, these currents developed a political discourse in reaction to the secularizing aspects of the modern democratic governance. The advocates of constitutional democracy and parliamentary rule in the late nineteenth-century Iran treated the traditional institutions of Shi'a Islam and the clergy as backward and as obstacles to the progress and modernization of society. In reaction, the traditionalist milieu represented by the Shi'a discourse and safeguarded by its guardians, mobilized to resist what they identified as a foreign onslaught. The first organized manifestation of this resistance emerged during the political opening of the early 1940s.

As the first cohesive expression of militant Islam in twentieth century Iran, the group Fadaian-e-Islam (est. 1945) moved to politicize the traditional religious sphere in opposing the secularizing policies of the state. The radical Fadaian politicized religion and laid the groundwork for the emergence of a lay Islamist activist base, the Mowtalefeh , creating a lay-clerical alliance that provided the pro-Khomeini support structure after the early 1960s. This structure played an instrumental role in giving the protest movement in Iran in 1978 an Islamic identity bringing about an Islamic state in the wake of the collapse of the monarchy a year later.

In the second segment of the period under study, the radicalization takes place in the postrevolutionary Iran under the Islamists. Ideological variations between the Fadaian vision of an Islamic state and Khomeini's vista remained dormant in the postrevolutionary Iran and resurfaced only with the death of Khomeini in 1989. This ideological rift over the role of Islam in society and the position of the clergy in politics appeared in the background of the tension between the conservative old-guard revolutionaries and a segment of the old revolutionaries now vying to reform the Islamic state. A faction from among the second generation of the radical revolutionaries of 1979 rose within the military-bureauratic structures of the regime in alliance with the conservatives to quell the reformist project. It was this alliance that gave way to the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005 as a representative of this faction. In the process of entering mainstream politics, this new radicalized group is also increasingly challenging the power monopoly of the old-guard conservatives.

In this dissertation, I trace the development of both of these processes of the radicalization of the Islamists and evaluate their causes, identify their carriers and conclude their consequences.
