"Social Media and Revolution" engages historical and theoretical analyses to examine the role of the social media in instigating social revolution. Through the lenses of Habermas' theory of the political public sphere and Dahl's theories on democracy, this thesis compares the French Revolution of 1789 with the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. It asks: Does a corollary exist between the role of the printing press and newspapers in the French Revolution and the role of internet and social media sites in the Egyptian Revolution? It concludes that in both instances, technology accelerated the process of shaping public opinion by increasing access to alternative information and expanding the respective dissident populations.
