Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2016.
Many military members returning from combat are not only experiencing symptoms of posttraumatic stress, but also a conflicted relationship with their spouse. This study investigated the effectiveness of combining Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy for married military members and military spouses. Four groups were compared: a group that received just EFT, a group that received just EMDR, a group that received a combination of EFT and EMDR, and a control group. Results showed that the combined approach was most effective at increasing marital satisfaction, and marital attachment. The combined approach also decreased posttraumatic symptoms, but not as much as just EMDR. The results are discussed and recommendations for further research are provided.
