Thesis (D.B.A.)--Capella University, 2016.
A pilot shortage for the domestic Unites States has been forecasted since the late nineteen eighties. Since 2014, a pilot shortage has been in effect in the lower levels of the airline industry, and is now manifesting itself at the regional airlines. Research indicates that the factors contributing to the domestic pilot shortage include retirements, starting pay and benefits, the cost of training, and problems retaining and recruiting entry-level positions. In addition, restrictive government regulations put into effect after the Colgan Airways crash have exacerbated the problem by requiring both extra training time and increased traffic costs. Human capital theory was used as the theoretical framework for the study because the pilot shortage involves a shortage of qualified human capital. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to gain a deeper level of understanding of airline management strategies to address the problem of a pilot shortage. A sample of convenience of six airline executives was selected , and interviewed as part of data collection. Six themes emerged from data analysis. These themes touched on the following topics: airlines' needs assessment and environment, pilot compensation and benefits, pilot training costs and expenses , new government regulations and their effect on training, employee relations, and pilot recruitment methods. The results of the study confirm that a pilot shortage exists. The choices airline management makes to address change and disruptive influences in the industry will be critical and will shape the future of the airlines. Recommendations for future research include qualitative case studies with larger sample sizes and improved cross-sections of participants. In addition, studies focusing on improved recruitment methods, and the effects new government regulations are having on the aviation industry are encouraged.
