The history of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in England began with Thomas Shelton's translation of Don Quixote in 1612. Since that date, Cervantes' reputation has grown and solidified, until, by the nineteenth century, he was widely recognized as a literary genius and author of a masterpiece. This study examines the presence of Don Quixote in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England as manifested through translations, illustrations, paintings, theatrical works, and literature. The study discusses how the eighteenth century lead to the radical reassessment of the novel by the Romantics, leaving the Victorians to struggle with the challenge of absorbing the Romantic interpretation and communicating their own very different attitude towards quixotism.

The first chapter is an overview of Don Quixote's history in England prior to the nineteenth-century. The second chapter begins with a discussion of eighteenth-century translations of Don Quixote by Peter Motteux, Charles Jarvis, and Tobias Smollett before turning to the Victorian translations of Alexander James Duffield, John Ormsby, and Henry Edward Watts. In chapter three, illustrations for Don Quixote by eighteenth-century artists such as John Vanderbank, William Hogarth, and Francis Hayman and by nineteenth-century artists such as George Cruikshank, A. B. Houghton, and Gustave Dore are examined. Also included in this chapter is an overview of paintings based on Don Quixote. The fourth chapter discusses how William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair and four samples of periodical literature reflect the influence of Cervantes as well as the Victorian attitude towards quixotism.

Appendices A and B are passages in Spanish of Don Quixote. These excerpts have been included for those who want to compare the translated passages, which I provide in Chapter Two, to the original. Appendix C is a chronological compilation of all illustrated editions of Don Quixote from 1700--1900. Appendix D provides a brief history of Don Quixote on stage in nineteenth-century England.
