The decision literature indicates that people use simplifying heuristics to reduce cognitive effort when deciding among options. In the task studied, participants were to choose the most preferred from a set of options (gambles or fictitious job offers) where one appraises the options in serial fashion and makes a "yes" or "no" decision. The process continued until the first "yes" decision was made. This selection process provides a reasonable model for many real life decisions, such as a person deciding whether to accept a proposal of marriage or an individual selecting a job offer.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The results showed that people search more deeply into the set of options when they do not know the range of attribute values of the stimuli than when they do know the range. Depth of search increases as number of options increases and as experience with the task increases. Also, the more complex the stimuli, the more deeply one searches. However, most people do not search as deeply as prescribed by the optimal strategy.

An analysis of well known strategies modified to fit the serial decision task was conducted on each of the Context levels. The adaptive strategies were Serial Weighted Additive, Serial Equal Weight, Satisficing, Serial Frequency of Good and Bad Features, Serial Majority of Confirming Dimensions, Two Dimension, One Dimension, and Fixed Number. For the gambles, a Serial Majority of Confirming Dimensions strategy provided a better fit to the data than other adaptive strategies. For the job offers, a simpler Two Dimension strategy provided a better fit to the data than other adaptive strategies. The job offer stimulus was created to be more complex than the gamble stimulus. The results showed that people use a simpler strategy as the problem complexity increase.

While people searched more deeply into the set of options when the problem complexity increased, the use of simplifying strategies is an adaptive response to maintain efficient processing within the limitations of one's information processing capacities.
