There is a wealth of research on the experiences of women in corporate America. However, there was a lack of research on the experiences of ethnic minority women in the U.S. financial services industry, particularly in ascending the corporate ladder to positions of senior leadership. The lack of literature in this area prompted the researcher to explore the experiences and descriptions that ethnic minority women in financial services firms place on their career development and advancement opportunities to learn what barriers, if any, may play a role in the low representation of this population in the top echelons of these firms, as well as what could be done to increase opportunities for growth and advancement. A generic qualitative study was conducted to better understand the experiences of six ethnic minority women, between the ages of 36 and 49. Seven themes emerged from participant interviews: (a) personal attributes of female leaders, (b) relationships, (c) team/group activities, (d) positive organizational factors, (e) organizational opportunities, (f) organizational barriers, and (g) organizational impacts. Study findings follow the literature for most of the themes: (a) personal attributes of female leaders, (b) relationships, (c) team/group activities, (f) organizational barriers, and (g) organizational impacts. However, (d) positive organizational factors and (e) organizational opportunities were not supported by the research. These findings have important implications for practitioners and human resource professionals charged with developing programs to improve ethnic minority women's advancement and development opportunities and upper management representation in financial services organizations.
