Thesis (Ph.D.)--The New School, 2016.

The dissertation investigates the macroeconomic policy of the Euro Area, which has been characterized by a lack of political consensus on important area-wide problems such as high unemployment and internal imbalances. In the final chapter, I document the poor macroeconomic performance of eleven large Euro Area economies over time by making use of a macroeconomic performance indicator based on the Magic Square of economic policy. The second chapter deals with the issue of current account imbalances within the Eurozone. In order to potentially correct current acccount deviations by changes in final demand, I calculate spillover effects of German final demand on Southern European countries in a joint piece with Enno Schroder. Finally, the role of national sovereignty within the currency block is touched upon in the first chapter. As quantitative easing had been withheld for a long time by the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, I investigate whether a single country within the monetary union can conduct monetary financing on its own.
