This dissertation is a result of phenomenological research completed with five couples to study the effectiveness of therapies offered to families who have children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The premise is that although research has shown that parents and siblings are greatly affected by their experience, they receive little to no help from the therapies offered and that with sustained high stress, the marriage and relationship between the parents and the siblings is negatively affected, further exacerbating the symptoms of the child due to circular causality of stress in these families. The research through the years shows that these families are caught in a spiral of alienation from society, friends, and family. This research was confirmed by the experience of the parents interviewed who shared receiving little to no support individually, as a couple, or as a family unit.

However, each parent identified similar and specific time periods of greatest stress that were not dealt with in the treatment offered to them. These time periods were identified and defined in this dissertation, as well as the effects of chronic stress on each member of the family. The themes that surfaced as a result of the interviews were examined from a Bowenian theoretical perspective as they related to each parent, each family, and all five families as a group to further increase understanding of the effects of autism on the family system, the marital relationship, the siblings, and the autistic child.
