The goal of this dissertation is to articulate the purposeful presence of natural law within The Brothers Karamazov. The two primary manifestations of natural law occur in - the presentation of universally available intuitions in nature, and through movements of conscience. The broad presence of a universal law existing outside of the perspective of any one character suggests the presence of a guiding force for understanding the conflicting philosophies of numerous characters who each struggle to explain man's existence.

520 $a The Brothers Karamazov is heavily dialogue driven, and most critics attempt to understand the novel by singling out one character and using that character as a lens for understanding the entire work. Some critics disagree about whether the novel even professes a particular perspective. As far as I could surmise, within this overarching debate, none properly examines the presence of the natural world and its significance. Repeatedly, scenes involving nature repeatedly mark occasions of spiritual insight. This has been noted by critics, but not in conjunction with conscience, another occasion indicating the presence of a universal principle. Examining the universal role of nature in conjunction with the presence of conscience, I determined that The Brothers Karamazov presents a reality structured on principles which correspond with a natural law.
520 $a The presence of a natural law within The Brothers Karamazov seems to indicate an authorial intention to affirm one explanation of man's existence. More specifically, this dissertation suggests that, in light of all of the explanations available within the dialogues, the Christian worldview as depicted within The Brothers Karamazov offers the only perspective outside of mere dialogue for properly understanding the conflicting perspectives of the various characters.
