Health literacy deficits are a recognized problem in the U.S. population. Recent initiatives have focused less strongly on studying patients and more strongly upon addressing health literacy as a universal component in effective patient care and communication. Registered Nurses (RNs) are the largest group of health care providers in the U. S. but little is known about what they are doing to mitigate health literacy concerns in the patients they care for. This study evaluated the relationship between effective communication techniques RNs use to assess and promote health literacy and their communication self-efficacy.

The results of this study indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between the RNs' use of the effective communication techniques utilized to assess and promote health literacy and their communication self-efficacy. Additional findings showed the RNs' personal communication self-efficacy was positively correlated with their workplace communication self-efficacy. Of the demographic indicators, years of nursing experience was the only positive predictor of the use of the effective health literacy communication techniques. Also, the RNs reported using informal learning strategies to a greater extent than formal learning strategies to acquire communication techniques to assess and promote health literacy.

Other findings revealed that the RNs were not routinely using the effective health literacy assessment and promotion techniques. Also, only about half the RNs in this study felt highly confident in their communication self-efficacy. Additionally, there was a disparity in the frequency with which individual communication techniques used to assess and promote health literacy were routinely used by the RNs.

The implications of these findings are significant to the fields of health literacy, adult education, and the nursing profession. They can be used to help guide clinical practice and improve patient outcomes, to enhance nursing education, and provide opportunities for future research endeavors.
