Women have been underrepresented in the IT industry in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory case study was to explore the cultural aspects of information technology (IT) and how the aspects influenced the perceptions and career decisions of women to enter and remain in the IT industry. Participants were identified through the purposeful selection of candidates who met the criteria of having experienced influences of IT organizational cultural. The criteria used to determine the inclusion or exclusion of participants for the pilot and research study were women participants who had served in a mid-level IT position for more than four years in an organization in Central Florida. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed using Nvivo 10 (c) data analysis software. The ten themes that emerged from the study participants' responses and data analysis process were: (a) influences to pursue an IT career; (b) education and experience preparedness; (c) aspirations to remain working in IT; (d) IT cultural career influences; (e) the underrepresentation of women in IT; (f) sacrifices made to remain in IT; (g) IT culture as the culture related to women; (h) IT cultural influences to advance and remain in IT; (i) working with other women in the IT culture and (j) recommendations for success while working within the IT culture. The key findings of this research have implications for leaders to promote and encourage women working in the field of IT to advance and take advantage of job opportunities in computing related fields.
