This dissertation is a creative exploration in which the author reflects upon the memories and relations that she has built while traveling with researchers who work in the field of traditional plant medicine in the northeastern estuary region of the Brazilian Amazon. As Susanna Hecht and Alexander Cockburn point out in their history of the Amazonian basin The Fate of the Forest , Amazonia and the field of botanical knowledge are sites that have formed and been formed by European imaginings since the onset of Western colonization. From the sixteenth century, interchange between groups and the influx of culture and desire into this portal region, rich in resources, has not been the exception; it has been the rule.

This work illuminates a personal journey in which the author pursues questions that have haunted her from the time of her upbringing in another postcolonial context, the border region of the southwestern United States. The dissertation addresses the barriers and possibilities for understanding and cooperation across the lines of power and culture that persist in the social spaces that cultural theorist Mary Pratt terms "the Contact Zone, where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths" (34).

The contextualizing sections that surround the memoir serve to introduce the questions that led to the inquiry; explore the dilemmas and potential of memoir to illuminate questions of self among others; provide the physical and sociocultural context for the narrative; and reflect upon the author's growing understanding of memoir as a tool.

The heart of the Creative Dissertation is Chapter 3, the Memoir, entitled "The River That Suffers from the Tide." This chapter is composed of a series of vignettes that juxtapose observations, dreams, conversation, and self-reflection of her river travels and relations in Amazonia It illuminates deeper and more personal themes of self among others, themes that were revealed to her in the careful tracing of the forms that materialize in reflection upon memory.

The author delivers her meaning in the quiet expression of moments of awareness that emerge as she learns to release control and open to the lives around her, and, in doing so, begins to learn to listen. In the slow, swell of reflection upon the intimacies of the verdant landscape of the tributaries and forests in Amazonia, the tenuous landscape of friendship and clash across culture, and the internal landscape of dream and memory, the author reveals a welling understanding, which she gains through the guidance of Jonas, a traditional plant healer, of the importance of listening- to nature, to spirit, to circumstance. She learns that it is through developing the capacities of listening with respect, care, and understanding to "that which is next to her," that she is able to truly be present to her self and her fellow human beings.
