This dissertation is a creative exploration in which the author reflects upon the memories and relations that she has built while traveling with researchers who work in the field of traditional plant medicine in the northeastern estuary region of the Brazilian Amazon. As Susanna Hecht and Alexander Cockburn point out in their history of the Amazonian basin The Fate of the Forest , Amazonia and the field of botanical knowledge are sites that have formed and been formed by European imaginings since the onset of Western colonization. From the sixteenth century, interchange between groups and the influx of culture and desire into this portal region, rich in resources, has not been the exception; it has been the rule.

She learns that it is through developing the capacities of listening with respect, care, and understanding to "that which is next to her," that she is able to truly be present to her self and her fellow human beings.
