Thesis (Ed.D.)--Chicago State University, 2015.
Obesity in young children and adolescents has become an issue, and physical education (PE) is a resolution. The importance of PE to the overall benefit of individuals, from the cradle to the grave, needs to be reinforced at the policy level, with administrators. There is an understood and traditional undertone that PE is not as important as other subjects in school, particularly as a core subject. The purpose of this study was to examine administrators' (superintendents and principals) attitudes towards PE and determine future methods of approaches to change policies regarding equality for PE educators. A quantitative survey was administered to determine current attitudes. This quantitative study examined attitudes currently in place. Curricular and leadership theories were utilized. Participants were current administrators, who were invited to complete a survey containing 25 statements regarding PE topics. Surveys were sent through electronic mail, and participants were asked to respond within one month. An online questionnaire was completed by a total of 116 administrators. The Physical Education Survey (Appendix A) was used to examine the attitudes of administrators. Quantitative data was prepared and analyzed using SPSS statistical software.

Descriptive statistics were used to determine the relationship between administrators and their attitudes towards PE. The importance of the findings, were significant, as they showed that administrators generally did not have a negative attitude towards PE. Even though attitudes were generally positive towards PE, there was a contradiction between administrators' attitudes and their behavior towards core subjects. Implications and recommendations to administrators are discussed. There are overwhelming benefits of PE that have a positive impact on both the mind and the body. This benefit is helpful for PE educators, as well as administrators. The relationship between physical activity, particular aerobic exercise, and cognition has proven to increase standardized test scores. Administrators have powerful influence on curriculum decisions of the entire school, and the school culture is reflected in the attitude of the administrator.
