Athletics are behind the rest of society when it comes to homosexuality. Sports fans' perceptions towards gay athletes were studied on a micro level, including the variables of gender (male or female), age (18-30, 31-50, or 51 and up), sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual), and nationality (American, Canadian, or other) to examine if sport fans' perceptions change based upon the sexual orientation of the athlete. Sport fans are a large group of individuals who are lumped together; therefore examining each variable within the sport fans crowd provided more comprehensive data about sport fans' perceptions towards gay athletes. The purpose of this non-experimental, cross-sectional study was to clarify which sport fans, if any, are apprehensive towards gay athletes. Participation was anonymous. Participants linked on a web link, which randomly directly them to one of two videos. Both videos were identical highlight videos of athletes, with the exception that one video identified athletes in the video as gay and the other did not mention the sexuality of the athletes. The participants then completed a survey. The link to the videos and survey were distributed via the Internet through social media and e-mail. Data was gathered and examined from 211 participants who identified themselves as sport fans. Results showed there was not a statistically significant difference between the variables of gender, age, sexual orientation, or nationality. Males and female sport fans' perceptions were similar, ages 18 and up of sport fans' perceptions were similar, heterosexual and homosexual sport fans' perceptions were similar, and American and Canadian sport fans' perceptions were similar. However, from the data, a trend emerged. Sport fans, in every variable tested, had a more favorable perception of gay athletes than athletes who sexual orientation was not mentioned. There was a statistically significant difference in sport fans' perceptions towards gay athletes than athletes who sexuality was not mentioned. Further research needs to be completed to examine why sport fans have a more favorable perception of gay athletes. Additional research should also examine the perceptions from others within the sport business including, athletic administrators, coaches, teammates, and the media.
