Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northcentral University, 2016.
Almost half (45%) of college football players expect to play professionally, however only an estimated 2% of them will actually become players in the National Football League (NFL). African-Americans currently comprise approximately 67% of all NFL players, placing them in that select 2% who gain professional standings. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was three-fold: 1) to identify and delineate aspects of psychological resiliency demonstrated by African-American professional football players who successfully transition from high school to college football careers to playing in the National Football League, 2) to investigate the possible effects of the agent-player relationship on resiliency and pro-athlete transition, and 3) to document the advice given by African-American NFL players to other athletes who are attempting to follow the same path. The purposive sample for this study was three current African-American National Football League players. Ten themes emerged to answer the research questions from the participants' narratives. These were: 1) goal setting, 2) motivation, and 3) coping ability; 4) surviving the draft, 5) adaptability, and 6) rejection; 7) trust and honesty; 8) personal connection; 9) enjoy your opportunity, have fun, and focus, and 10) be realistic and prepare. Two other issues experienced by individual participants, perfectionism and injuries, were also noteworthy. Recommendations for future research include investigating the agent-athlete relationship as it relates to agency theory and agents' advice for money management and investments for athlete retirement after the NFL.
