Previous research on this topic has focused on team sports. Weinberg et al. (1984) reported negative attitudes toward female coaches. More recently, Habif, Van Raalte, & Cornelius (2001) reported positive attitudes toward female coaches suggesting a positive change in society's opinion toward female athletic administrators.

This study is designed to provide updated research on individual sports. To analyze the data, multiple two-way ANOVA's were performed and found there were no significant differences in the attitudes or preferences toward coaches. However, athletes showed a higher preference for a coach of the opposite gender than their current coach.
