Thesis (M.A.)--Kean University, 2016.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how specific factors affect post-collegiate student-athletes adjusting to "regular life" after retirement. The type of retirement and athletic identity will be observed to see if such factors affect the transitional process leading to overall life satisfaction. Depending on the quality of the transition, athletes may be at risk for a number of psychological difficulties affecting their overall happiness and quality of life. In a variety of measures, participant's self-reported their type of retirement. Athletic identity was measured by the AIMS and life satisfaction was measured by the ALQS. Student-athletes who retired involuntarily did not show a statistically significant difference regarding less overall life satisfaction than those who retire voluntarily. There was no relationship found between athletic identity and overall life satisfaction. Results indicated that participants for whom had been retired for less than 5 years showed a statistically significant difference in the AIMS scores, opposed to those who had been retired for 5 years or more. Regarding overall life satisfaction, there was not a statistically significant difference on the amount of years retired. Results found that participants with high athletic identity who voluntarily retired were in fact less satisfied overall, supporting the hypothesis, but those with high athletic identity who involuntarily retired did not show that they were less satisfied overall, rejecting the hypothesis.
