Background/Purpose: Awareness of activity patterns for older adults who reside in assisted living facilities can lead to increased insight of self-rated stress and quality of life. Understanding the correlation between activity patterns for older adults and the connection to health related stress and quality of life rates can increase the value of direct occupational therapy services. To date, there are no studies which have investigated the link between opportunities for activity engagement in assisted living and total activity retention levels and their effect on stress and quality of life.

Methods: A multiple-case study approach was utilized. The author conducted face-to-face sessions to administer the Perceived Stress Scale, World Health Organizations Quality of Life BREF, Activity Card Sort, and a brief semi-structured interviews, with 4 women, who resided in 2 different assisted living facilities in New York State.

Results/Conclusions: Only 1 of 4 participants fell into the higher than average category for stress and stress related illness. Activity retention rates varied from 17.8-51.7% and seemed to be affected by age, health status, and interest. Overall, participants reported that they felt more safe living in an assisted living facility than they would living on their own and rated their quality of life as good to very good. The fact that all 4 participants listed different activities of importance to them further points to the need for client centered care in occupational therapy practice. More research will help to inform how age and assisted living amenities may affect participation rates.
