In the United States youth disruptive behaviors are found among 5--10% of 8 to 16-year-olds and account for one-third to one-half of all youth mental health referrals. These disorders are disproportionately found in low-income communities with high proportions of racial and ethnic minorities. Significant questions remain regarding the relationships between various parent and child attributes that influence youth behavior difficulties, especially among families living in poverty impacted communities. Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine the associations between caregiver stress and depression, parenting practices, and youth disruptive behavior, among low-income, urban families experiencing problematic youth behavior in the reality of resource-poor communities. The extent to which these relationships are moderated by yearly income level was also examined. Baseline data was used from the effectiveness trial of the 4Rs and 2Ss Strengthening Families Intervention, funded by NIMH, originally collected at 13 community-based outpatient mental health clinics serving a primarily low-income population in communities throughout the New York City metropolitan area. Participants (n =320) were primarily low income, caregivers of color (primarily Latino and African Americans), who had youth (age 7-11) identified with Disruptive Behavior Disorder. Results found a direct relationship between caregiver distress and youth disruptive behavior. In addition, the parenting practices of positive involvement and negative/ineffective discipline were found to partially mediate this relationship. Yearly income was found to moderate the relationship between caregiver distress and positive involvement in parenting. Implications for theory, practice, policy and future research are discussed.
